😠 We left Rackspace after 15 years in which their customer service steadily declined to levels that were almost beyond belief.
In the final few months we have had:
Extraordinarily slow responses to requests for quotes for new service.
A blank refusal to quote us for the cloud based service they trumpet - presumably because this would reduce our costs.
Account managers telling us verbally that we were out of contract and then declaring when we tried to cancel our contracts that we needed to give them 90 days notice on the contracts that had ended and then telling us that we would have to pay another nine months for half of the services they provided, which they claimed were still in contract, in direct contradiction to what they'd told us by phone,
An initial refusal to escalate our complaints and then a claim to have escalated our complaint that we found difficult to believe since we had no contact whatsoever from a more senior manager.
Perhaps most tellingly, [read more...]

😠 I have a website that gets about 150,000 page views per month, Rackspace offered me a solution that was several hundred more a month than the competition and I went with it because of their "fanatical support" promise. Well as it turns out, the onboarding support was horrible and they did not set up the security suite I purchased with the service until I pushed the issue and still, it was hard to get someone to reply right away. They don't reply to tickets right away, they gave two reason, first is that they prioritize tickets (probably understaffed) and secondly was i don't spend as much as some of their other clients. Was this told to me during the sales process? Of course not, once they reeled me in and got me to sign on the dotted lines, than the support went south. Thei fanatical support promise appears to be just a PDF and a sales tool, I don't think it's real and I warn you to stay away from this over priced, over promised and under performing firm. It's seems to be profits [read more...]

Rackspace Technology is a long-established hosting and cloud services provider that started operations in 1998 in San Antonio, Texas, when three Trinity University classmates launched a managed hosting business that focused on doing more than just renting servers. Over time, the company evolved from traditional hosting into a broader multicloud and hybrid-cloud services specialist, rebranding as Rackspace Technology and positioning itself as an end-to-end partner for cloud, data, security and applications. They serve customers in more than 120 countries, including a significant portion of large enterprises, and are known for their "Fanatical Experience" approach to service.
From a classic hosting perspective, Rackspace still maintains a strong portfolio around managed hosting on dedicated infrastructure and colocation hosting. Managed Hosting is delivered on single-tenant bare-metal servers that are fully designed, deployed and operated by Rackspace engineers. Customers can choose custom dedicated servers, database management for MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, enterprise storage (SAN and NAS), managed backup, disaster recovery, networking and security components such as next-generation firewalls and DDoS mitigation. This gives them a clear positioning in the Dedicated Hosting and Managed Hosting space for mission-critical workloads where performance, compliance and SLAs matter more than low entry pricing.
Alongside dedicated infrastructure, Rackspace provides Colocation Hosting for organizations that want to keep ownership and control of their hardware while offloading data-center operations. Customers place their own servers and storage in Rackspace facilities, gaining access to enterprise power, cooling, connectivity and on-site "Smart Hands" support. Colocation is offered in dozens of data centers worldwide, with an emphasis on extending or exiting in-house data centers while retaining direct control over compute and security.
Rackspace is also deeply involved in cloud and private cloud. They are co-creators of OpenStack and still operate OpenStack Private Cloud Enterprise, offering fully managed OpenStack environments with a 99.99% API uptime commitment, dedicated compute nodes, redundant controller nodes, and scalable Ceph-based storage. Customers can run these private clouds in Rackspace data centers, their own facilities or third-party colocation sites. Beyond OpenStack, Rackspace manages environments on major public clouds including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and VMware-based private clouds, positioning itself as a multicloud managed services provider rather than a simple Infrastructure-as-a-Service vendor.
On top of infrastructure, Rackspace has a significant Email & Productivity line. Rackspace Email and Rackspace Email Plus provide business-class email with 25 GB mailboxes, anti-spam and virus protection, optional file storage and collaboration tools, and a dedicated webmail interface. These services are backed by explicit 100% uptime guarantees and 24x7x365 human support. Rackspace also runs and supports Microsoft 365, Hosted Exchange and related collaboration solutions, so email and productivity clearly remain an important part of their portfolio under the Emails and Managed Hosting categories.
The overall impression is of a provider that has deliberately moved away from commodity shared hosting and unmanaged VPS, and now focuses on larger organizations that need tailored Dedicated, Colocation, Private Cloud and Managed Public Cloud solutions, with strong SLAs and operational support as the main differentiator. However, by November 2025, a comparison with 2021 using WHTop’s historical prices, screenshots, and content suggests that Rackspace has shown little visible progress, which may indicate stagnation and even a gradual decline.
💰 Price & Cost
Pricing at Rackspace is largely custom and quote-based for infrastructure services. Managed Hosting on dedicated servers, colocation, OpenStack Private Cloud and multicloud managed services are all designed around each customer’s specific requirements: hardware configuration, storage profile, data-center location, security and compliance needs, and the level of managed services chosen. As a result, most core hosting and cloud products do not have standard public price lists, and engagements typically begin with a consultation and formal proposal rather than an instant shopping-cart checkout.
One of the few areas with transparent per-unit pricing is Rackspace Email (identically prices from November 2021). Standard business email mailboxes start at $2.99 USD per mailbox per month, with a monthly commitment and no long-term contract or upfront setup fee. Rackspace Email Plus, which adds online file storage (Cloud Drive), desktop file synchronization, browser-based document and spreadsheet editors, and ActiveSync mobile synchronization, is priced at $3.99 USD per mailbox per month. An Archiving add-on, offering unlimited storage for archived email and advanced search for compliance, is available at an additional $3.00 USD per mailbox per month. These plans include a 14-day free trial, and customers can cancel or change services at any time, which makes the email line comparatively straightforward and accessible even for smaller businesses.
Other cloud offerings, including GPU-as-a-Service via Rackspace Spot and various managed cloud services, are billed on a usage and service-bundle basis under a Master Services Agreement. Instead of consumer-style money-back guarantees, Rackspace emphasizes contractual SLAs and service credits: if uptime or infrastructure guarantees are not met, customers receive credits against their monthly fees, up to 100% of the affected service charge in some cases. There is no general, simple "30-day money-back guarantee" advertised across the whole portfolio.
The global site presents pricing primarily in US dollars. Regional versions of the site (for example in Portuguese or Spanish) are available for local markets and may present localized offers, but the company remains focused on enterprise customers rather than on transparent low-tier pricing. Payment methods and billing models (invoicing, cards, etc.) are not prominently detailed on the website and are generally tied to the contractual relationship and customer size.
🏢 Data Center
Rackspace operates an extensive, enterprise-grade global data center footprint. Their facilities are designed with multiple layers of redundancy for physical security, power, cooling and network connectivity. Data centers are protected by biometric access controls and 24x7x365 surveillance, use uninterruptible power supplies to guard against power issues, and feature N+2 redundant chillers and redundant water sources to maintain stable environmental conditions. HVAC systems are designed for immediate failover and to remove dust and contaminants, which is important for long-term hardware reliability.
The company’s infrastructure spans key technical and financial markets worldwide. Dedicated data centers are listed in locations including Amsterdam (AMS2), Ashburn (IAD3), Chicago (ORD1), Dallas (DFW3), Frankfurt (FRA1 and FRA2), Hong Kong (HKG1 and HKG5), Kansas City (MCI1), London (LON3, LON5 and LON8), New York City (NYC1 and NYC2), San Jose (SJC2), Shanghai (SHA3), Singapore (SIN2) and Sydney (SYD2). On top of Rackspace-operated facilities, the colocation division notes a fleet of around 40 secure colocation data centers across four continents, with additional capacity through partnerships with Iron Mountain and Digital Realty to broaden location options and capacity.
Rackspace places particular emphasis on network resilience. Their backbone blends bandwidth from four Tier-1 transit providers and is engineered to avoid single points of failure. Traffic is proactively monitored and routed across the fastest available path, which is especially relevant for global deployments where latency and reliability must be consistent.
A key differentiator is the set of industry-leading guarantees attached to these facilities. Rackspace offers a 100% Network Uptime Guarantee: the data center network is guaranteed to be available 100% of the time in a given month (excluding scheduled or emergency maintenance). If this target is not met, customers receive a 5% credit of the monthly fee for every 30 minutes of network downtime, up to 100% of the monthly fee for the affected server. A similar 100% availability guarantee applies to data-center HVAC and power, with identical credit mechanics for infrastructure downtime. In addition, a Hardware Replacement Guarantee states that Rackspace will begin repair or replacement of Rackspace-provided hardware within one hour of problem identification, again backed by service credits up to 100% of the monthly fee for the affected hardware if this is not met.
For OpenStack Private Cloud Enterprise, Rackspace extends these commitments with a 99.99% OpenStack API uptime guarantee, a 15-minute live response time for emergency tickets, 100% network uptime and 100% availability for critical infrastructure systems in Rackspace data centers, plus defined timelines for hardware replacement both in their own facilities and in third-party data centers. This level of SLA is clearly aimed at organizations running mission-critical workloads that cannot tolerate frequent outages.
Overall, the data-center strategy is clearly aligned with medium to large enterprises that require global reach, predictable performance and contractually enforced uptime guarantees, rather than with low-cost, best-effort hosting.
✍️ Customer Support
Customer support is central to Rackspace’s positioning and is branded as a Fanatical Experience. Support is not limited to break/fix interactions; it covers the full lifecycle from initial consulting and solution design through migration and daily operations. For companies that do not have deep in-house cloud expertise, Rackspace effectively acts as an extension of the IT team.
Support is available 24x7x365 through multiple channels. Customers can open tickets and manage environments through the Rackspace Customer Portal, use the Cloud Office Control Panel for email and productivity services, or access webmail via a dedicated login. Company offers phone and live chat contact options, and the main cloud page lists support phone numbers including a toll-free US number and an international support line. Cloud-specific services such as Elastic Engineering provide ongoing access to dedicated teams of cloud specialists (for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OpenStack, VMware and security) who work closely with internal IT teams on architecture, optimization and automation.
The email and productivity products provide a concrete view of Rackspace’s service culture. For Rackspace Email, the company publishes operational metrics such as an average 36-second human response time for support calls and an average customer satisfaction score of 4.5 out of 5. Email support is explicitly advertised as human-centered, with specialists available at all times and assistance included in the mailbox price. This fits with their strategy of using support quality as a major differentiator versus commodity email providers.
In the colocation space, Rackspace offers a Smart Hands SLA in selected data centers, with guarantees such as one-hour response time and 24-hour execution on certain on-site tasks. This is a notable distinction from many pure colocation providers that treat remote hands as a best-effort, non-guaranteed service.
Customers also benefit from structured documentation and transparency: Rackspace maintains documentation and API references on a dedicated docs portal, and provides public system status pages for both core infrastructure and email/apps. For enterprises that operate complex multicloud environments, this combination of proactive support, SLA-backed operations and extensive documentation is a major part of the value proposition.
🔨 Control Panel
Rackspace does not rely on mass-market control panels like cPanel or Plesk for its core hosting business. Instead, it uses a combination of proprietary portals and standard enterprise interfaces.
For infrastructure and cloud services, customers typically work through the Rackspace Customer Portal, which provides access to ticketing, account management and control over dedicated and cloud resources, often in conjunction with provider-specific consoles (for example, AWS, Azure or Google Cloud consoles for public cloud workloads). For Rackspace-managed private clouds like OpenStack or VMware, customers interact through standard APIs and dashboards, while Rackspace manages the underlying hardware, hypervisors and platform services.
In the cloud operations layer, Rackspace promotes Rackspace Fabric, a governance and integration layer that unifies ticketing, billing, tagging and compliance across multiple clouds and platforms. This is more of a cross-cloud management framework than a traditional web-hosting control panel, but it addresses the needs of organizations that run fleets of workloads across different environments.
For email and productivity services, the Cloud Office Control Panel allows administrators to manage mailboxes, domains, aliases, spam settings and related features. End users access their mail through a dedicated Rackspace Webmail interface or via standard protocols using Outlook and mobile clients. Rackspace Email Plus additionally exposes Cloud Drive features via desktop synchronization apps and browser-based editors, again managed through Rackspace’s own interfaces.
The overall control and management experience is oriented toward IT departments and DevOps teams that want powerful, integrated tools and the ability to offload low-level maintenance, rather than toward individual users expecting a simple one-click website builder with shared hosting.
🎯 Conclusion
Rackspace Technology occupies a clear niche in the hosting market: it is not a low-cost shared hosting provider, but a long-standing managed hosting and multicloud services specialist with strong emphasis on SLAs, global infrastructure and expert support. Strengths include a broad and well-integrated portfolio (managed dedicated servers, colocation, OpenStack private cloud, managed public cloud on AWS/Azure/Google/Oracle, security and data services), a substantial global data-center footprint with robust redundancy, and explicit 100% network and infrastructure uptime guarantees backed by meaningful service credits. Their leadership in OpenStack, combined with specialist services for databases, security and application operations, makes them attractive for organizations that want a partner to handle complex infrastructure rather than a vendor that just sells raw compute.Customer support is another key differentiator. Metrics like sub-minute human response times for email support, Smart Hands SLAs in colocation, and 24x7x365 "Fanatical" support across all tiers contribute to a perception of a service-driven company. For enterprises that value having engineers on call, as well as structured advisory and professional services, this can justify a premium over more basic providers.
On the other hand, Rackspace’s model will not suit everyone. Public pricing is limited mostly to email products; almost everything else is sold through consultations and contracts, which can be a barrier for smaller customers who prefer transparent, self-service pricing. The portfolio is extensive and sometimes complex, requiring time to understand the options and combinations. There is no simple money-back guarantee, and success with Rackspace usually depends on engaging at an architectural and operational level rather than treating it as a commodity cloud vendor.
In summary, Rackspace is best recommended for mid-sized and large organizations that run critical workloads, need hybrid or multicloud architectures, and want a provider that takes responsibility for design, deployment and ongoing operations. For a small brochure site or a hobby project, other hosts with simple shared or VPS plans are more appropriate. But for enterprises seeking strong SLAs, global data centers and deep managed-services expertise, Rackspace remains a serious contender.

😠 rackspace sucks
These guys suck. I've been programming for decades and I've never seen corporate behavior like this. Terrible customer service. I was invoiced so excessively one month and complained, but they were totally unreceptive. This company is rotten to the core, and I would never return as a customer

😠 Fanatical Credit Card Billing
This company is not focused on providing high tech IT, but emptying your wallet instead. If they spent half of the money they waste on marketing, ads, and paid reviewers, they would be able to provide a good service, but they don't. The IT guys are probably bachelors. Don't buy their services unless you want to be treated like a piece of sh**

😠 No control panel and crap support. Wow. And very expensive. I just had a live chat with them and they didn't know if the account was windows or linux, if there were any databases. Even worse, they couldn't give me FTP instructions.

😠 Rackspace has promoted very incompetent people into management positions of technical groups that don't have a clue. Many good techs are bailing.

😁 Wish We Found Them First
IN January 2010 we signed up with Rackspace and hoped for the best as our first experience with managed hosting with 800Hosting was a disaster. The switch to Rackspace has been a great improvement for us. We have been with them for almost a year and have NO complaints about any of our websites, blogs or databases we have hosted with them. They have delivered all that they promised.
Our first experience with managed hosting was with 800Hosting and they delivered NONE of what they promised. They had a great website with great promises, but were more than a disappointment. All of our fully managed websites went down due to a catastrophic failure with their server, and we had to notify them! They did not even know! We purchased monitoring 24/7 so how could that be? We had purchased a fully managed dedicated server so we would not have such problems. They lost valuable confidential customer personal data and almost all product images - gone forever. We purchased daily back up so how [read more...]

😠 Today is saturday 20th 2010 and my site has been down for one hour suddenly.
I pay $120 a month and I know that others are paying $180 for the same service. Site Clouds are not working properly. Less than a month ago I changed my hosting from Justhost were I had a horrible service in a shared environment and I transfered my site to Rackspace. They barrely helped me at all to transfer my site. They trully don't understand that $120 or even more $180 is an important enough amount

MOSSO SUCKS (mosso@m...)
😠 If you are interested in having a web site that your users will never be able to access and you like to spend your time on the phone with technical support telling you nothing is wrong yet everything is not working... the mosso is the loser web hosting for you.
They are assholes and way over priced. Don't waste your efforts they lie about everything and you will regret ever spending your valuable time getting screwed. legal action is next... take them down hard... the end of mosso is evident. out of business !!! [import from mosso.com]

I won't extol the virtues of VPS hosting in general, save to say that it really is freeing to get away from a shared provider. And if you need a "Cloud" server (VPS, they used to call 'em), Slicehost is your company. You've got to be able to manage your own server to use this service, but I'm no guru and it isn't impossible. I've been with Slicehost for a couple of years now - since back when you had to sign up on a waiting list to get an account. And ever since the day I got that email that my Slice had been provisioned, I've been a happy customer. Plus, they provide some of the best web server administration articles and tutorials that can be found...anywhere. (People I work with come to their site for the tutorials even if though they're not customers). The message boards are a [read more...]

😠 Decent uptime and server stability. Decent throughput.
Website is misleading and is at odds with the terms and conditions. Support seems uninterested in the confusing and misleading information.
Disappointing experience with customer service. Would recommend people avoid this provider. [import from slicehost.com]

😁 I’m currently with their Cloud Servers plan and everything seems great so far. The price, the uptime and server responsiveness are all recommended. Definitely one of the best in unmanaged hosting.
Their Cloud Sites is somewhat expensive for me right now, so no clue how good or bad is it. But the reviews I found on the Web seems mixed with positive and negative ones. However, there’s merits that I can see from them that are not found elsewhere such as:
1. The support goodness backed by RackSpace
2. Linux and Windows hybrid hosting
But I’m planning to give it a trial for a month by the promo coupon code I have found at retailmenot.com: REF-YY. I may stay with them for a few months or so to see if it survives with all my sites that are at present hosted by another hosting company. No clue at all what the hell 10k computing cycles can do until you try it. [import from mosso.com]
