(3*) 🔧 Services: Web HostingDomain Registration Own datacenter
⇔ Redirected from stackable.com
XMission is a long-running independent internet and hosting provider based in Salt Lake City, Utah, active since 1993 and founded by technology entrepreneur Pete Ashdown. Over three decades they have evolved from a local ISP into a provider that blends connectivity, hosting, email, voice and professional services for both small businesses and larger organizations. Everything is anchored in their own downtown data center and backbone network, with a strong emphasis on privacy, transparency and environmental responsibility.

From a hosting perspective, the portfolio is surprisingly complete for a regional operator. Under Domain & Hosting Services they provide domain registration, Linux shared hosting on Plesk, managed and unmanaged cloud VPS, and carrier-neutral colocation. On top of that, they run a mature Email & Collaboration platform powered by Zimbra (with a transition to iRedMail planned for 2026), plus SSL certificates and some private-label / reseller options. All of these share the same technical backbone and 24/7 support structure, which gives the offer a coherent, "single-vendor" feel even if you use several services at once.

Shared hosting is the primary entry point for websites. There are two plans: Shared Hosting at $15/month and Shared Hosting Pro at $49/month. Both run on well-tuned Linux servers in XMission’s own data center and include Plesk, WordPress Toolkit, Imunify360 security, support for PHP/MySQL/FTP/SSH, unlimited DNS entries and domain aliases, and nightly backups with offsite storage. The standard plan offers 20 GB disk space and up to 10 websites / 10 databases, while the Pro tier increases this to 100 GB and up to 25 websites / 25 databases. The positioning is clearly for small and mid-sized business sites that need stability and a clean upgrade path to cloud or colocation later.

For projects that outgrow shared hosting, XMission offers two types of cloud VPS. Managed Cloud Hosting targets businesses that want dedicated resources but prefer not to maintain servers themselves. XMission provisions and manages the underlying infrastructure (compute, storage, networking, operating system, patches, monitoring and backups) and remains on call as a remote "web operations team". Customers size their environment using per-resource pricing (CPU cores, RAM and disk) on top of a fixed monthly management fee. Unmanaged Cloud is essentially the same virtualized infrastructure without the "white glove" management; it suits developers and sysadmins who want root access and are comfortable administering their own stack while leaving hardware and virtualization to XMission.

At the high end, Colocation is a major strength. XMission hosts customer equipment in its own SOC 2-certified, carrier-neutral data center downtown, offering 1U promos, quarter cabinets and full cabinets with flat-rate bandwidth, redundant power, extensive peering and remote hands. Promotional bundles such as "Easy Start" (1U with 100 Mb flat-rate bandwidth) and full cabinets with 1G ports make it straightforward to cost out a footprint. Colocation customers benefit from the same 24/7 monitoring, multi-carrier connectivity and N+1 power that underpin XMission’s network services, plus a 100% uptime SLA attached to the Easy Start colocation promo.

Email is treated as a first-class service rather than a small add-on. The Email & Collaboration platform is built on Zimbra, with Base, Premium and Professional per-mailbox plans that add features like larger storage, chat, video conferencing, archiving, shared calendars and advanced search. For individuals there is a Personal Premium email option on the @xmission.com domain with 50 GB storage and the same modern web and mobile experience. These services are clearly designed as a hosted alternative to running Exchange or other on-premise groupware.

The portfolio is complemented by SSL Certificates (from established CAs such as GeoTrust and Thawte) that XMission sells and installs as a managed service, and by domain registration with free WHOIS privacy, DNS hosting and simple management tools. Taken together, the line-up is well suited for customers who want to keep domains, hosting, email and security in one place, on infrastructure operated by a technically strong regional provider rather than a giant global brand.

As of today, XMission still offers the same Cloud and Shared plans with identical names, pricing, and even core features as in July 2019, which points to stagnation and an apparent lack of progress in adopting newer technologies.

💰 Price & Cost

Shared hosting is priced in a straightforward way. The baseline Shared Hosting plan starts at $15/month with 20 GB of disk space and capacity for up to 10 sites and 10 databases. Shared Hosting Pro is $49/month, offering 100 GB of disk space and up to 25 sites and 25 databases. Both plans include Plesk, WordPress Toolkit, Imunify360 protection and the usual developer tools, with no setup fees and no long-term contracts. A money-back guarantee is explicitly mentioned for shared hosting, and accounts that are terminated can receive a refund of the remaining balance minus a small processing fee, which gives some comfort if a project does not work out as planned.

Managed cloud pricing is resource-based. CPU cores, RAM and disk each have a clear monthly unit price, and on top of that there is a $100/month management fee that covers XMission’s ongoing operational work (patching, monitoring, security, and coordination with your developers). Typical pre-configured examples are:
  • Basic Managed Cloud at around $127/month (1 core, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB disk) for simple e-commerce or modest WordPress sites.
  • Standard at $150/month (2 cores, 2 GB RAM, 8 GB disk) for framework-based CMS sites and busier WordPress installations.
  • Advanced at $200/month (4 cores, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB disk) for high-traffic e-commerce or multiple large sites.

All include 1 TB of transfer and can be adjusted up or down as needs change. The unmanaged VPS offer uses the same unit pricing without the management fee, with example packages such as $27/month (1 core, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB disk), $50/month (2 cores, 2 GB, 8 GB disk) and $100/month (4 cores, 4 GB, 16 GB disk). This is not bargain-basement hosting, but the pricing is reasonable for fully owned infrastructure with 24/7 support and flexible scaling.

Colocation is also clearly costed. Current promo bundles include:
  • Easy Start: $75/month for 1U, 100 Mb flat-rate bandwidth, one 120 V power outlet and a small routed subnet, with a one-year term and free install. This package is also tied to a 100% uptime SLA.
  • Quarter Cab Budget: $349/month for a quarter cabinet with 100 Mb flat-rate bandwidth and a 20A/120 V power circuit plus a /29 IPv4 subnet.
  • Catch a Cab!: $849/month for a full cabinet, 1 Gbps flat-rate bandwidth, 20A/120 V power and a /29 IPv4 subnet.

For email, Zimbra-based Email & Collaboration offers Base mailboxes starting around $1.95/month, Premium at about $5/month and Professional at $8/month per mailbox, with storage ranging from 6 GB to 50 GB and extra functionality on the higher tiers. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies here, and volume discounts are available. Personal Premium Email on @xmission.com is priced at about $4.95/month per account for 50 GB mailboxes, also with a 30-day money-back period.

Domain registration and renewal for common TLDs like .com, .net and .org is quoted at $21/year, including WHOIS privacy and managed DNS. SSL certificates are sold on annual terms at competitive rates, with installation handled by XMission’s technicians.
On the payment side, XMission accepts cash, checks, ACH transfers and major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. They support both automatic and manual billing via their online control panel and by phone. If a non-contracted account is cancelled, any remaining prepaid balance is refundable minus a modest processing fee, while accounts closed for policy violations are not eligible for refunds.

🏢 Data Center

A major differentiator for XMission is that they operate their own data center on-site at their headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City. Shared hosting, cloud servers and colocation all run from this facility, which reduces dependency on third-party data center operators and gives customers a direct line to the people actually responsible for power, cooling and physical security.

The facility is built to a solid standard for a regional provider. The main POP and colocation hall sits in a low-disaster-risk area, with N+1 power redundancy from UPS through to generators and automatic transfer switches. Cooling has been optimized over the years to the point where the site carries an Energy Star certification with a top-tier efficiency score. Power and environmental conditions are monitored around the clock, and there is continuous alerting for on-call engineers if anything drifts out of tolerance.

From a security perspective, XMission uses two-factor biometric access to the data center and maintains extensive surveillance. Doors, cameras and environmental sensors are monitored 24/7, with access logs and camera footage archived for extended periods. The facility is SOC 2 certified and integrated into XMission’s PCI DSS compliance, which is particularly relevant for customers with regulated workloads or those needing to pass their own audits.

On the network side, XMission operates more than 100 Gbit/s of capacity across multiple upstream providers and peering points. The backbone uses redundant border and core routers, and the company peers directly with major players such as Google, Microsoft and Netflix, as well as operating the Salt Lake Internet Exchange. There are additional POPs in other Utah data centers (e.g., DataBank, Level 3 / CenturyLink / Lumen Technologies, UTOPIA (utopiafiber.com) and EdgeConneX), plus a ring connection over UTOPIA fiber, which gives XMission a resilient regional footprint rather than a single-facility setup. IPv6 is fully supported, and there are local caching servers for popular content to reduce latency.

For colocation customers, XMission explicitly emphasizes N+1 redundancy across infrastructure, flat-rate bandwidth options from 100 Mb to 10 Gb, real-time and historical bandwidth graphs, 24/7 remote hands and the ability to combine colocated servers with cloud instances in hybrid architectures. The "Easy Start" colocation promo adds a 100% uptime SLA on top of this, reflecting confidence in the underlying design. Shared hosting and cloud customers benefit from the same network and power architecture, which translates into high practical availability even where no explicit numeric uptime is quoted.

✍️ Customer Support

Technical support is available 24/7 via phone, email and live chat. There is a local Salt Lake phone number for those in the area and a toll-free number for customers across the U.S., with sales and billing staffed on weekdays during business hours and technical support available around the clock.

In addition to real-time channels, XMission provides a detailed support wiki and resource center that cover common topics like billing, control panel use, email configuration and anti-phishing guidance. For hosted email, there is extra Zimbra-specific documentation, and for advanced services such as colocation and cloud, customers can tap into network and systems engineers who routinely handle ACLs, DDoS mitigation, backup strategies and private line setups.

They are a technically focused regional provider than to a mass-market discount host. Customers who are comfortable engaging with support on specifics – firewall rules, DNS design, migration planning – will likely find the mix of expertise and 24/7 availability appealing, especially when compared to outsourced or ticket-only support models.

🔨 Control Panel

For shared hosting, Plesk is the central control panel. Customers manage domains, websites, mailboxes, databases and file uploads from a single interface, with one-click installations for popular applications such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. The integrated WordPress Toolkit simplifies staging, theme management and updates, while Imunify360 hardens sites against common attacks and malware. Plesk also exposes backup and restore options, so less technical users can trigger their own backups alongside the nightly jobs handled by XMission.

Domain customers use a dedicated domain control panel to manage DNS records, subdomains, WHOIS privacy and domain locking. This keeps domain operations separate but integrated with hosting, SSL and email, and makes it straightforward to route custom domains to shared hosting or cloud instances.

The broader XMission account and billing portal is used to view invoices, manage payment methods, toggle automatic billing and adjust account information. For email, the primary user interface is Zimbra’s modern webmail and mobile clients, while administrators have an additional Zimbra admin console to create, modify and remove mailboxes or add archiving and collaboration features. Cloud and colocation customers interact either through the VPS environment (full root access) or via direct communication with XMission’s engineers, and they can consult dedicated statistics portals for traffic data.

🎯 Conclusion

XMission stands out as a technically capable, values-driven regional provider with its own data center and backbone network. The company has been operating since 1993 under the same brand and local ownership, which is increasingly rare in a market dominated by large holding groups. Customers get a coherent stack of services – domains, shared hosting, managed and unmanaged cloud, colocation, email and SSL – all sitting on infrastructure that XMission directly controls and actively maintains.

Strengths include the robustness of the network and data center, a genuine commitment to privacy and environmental responsibility, and a support organization that is both accessible 24/7 and comfortable dealing with more complex issues. The path from a small shared hosting account up through managed cloud and colocation is particularly attractive for businesses that expect to grow and want to stay with a single provider as they scale.

On the downside, pricing is higher than ultra-budget shared hosts and cloud VPS providers, and the physical footprint is effectively centered in Utah, which may not be ideal for workloads that require geographic diversity or extremely low latency in other regions. The platform is more traditional than hyperscale cloud providers and there is no global network of data centers to choose from.

Overall, XMission is a strong fit for customers who value reliability, clear engineering, on-shore support and the ability to speak directly with the people running their infrastructure. It is less suited to those whose primary requirement is the lowest possible price or a presence in multiple continents, but for U.S. businesses – especially in the Intermountain West – it offers a very solid hosting and colocation home.
